Chronicles of Nick: Invincible

Poor Nick...
This kid has had it really super rough. In the second book in the Chronicles of Nick series, our hero finds himself in a whole lot of trouble. He learns things about his new friends that make his head spin. Generally, Nick handles the various revelations quite well.
First, he finds out that Kyrian is a  Dark-Hunter after seeing his fangs. After a quick freak out, Kyrian explains to Nick that there was no way he would eat Nick (mentioned something about indigestion) and that Dark-Hunters exist to protect mankind.
Cherise starts working for Sanctuary after getting fired from her old job. As it turns out, Sanctuary is owned by a family of shape shifters who turn into bears.
Next, Nick finds himself on the wrong side of his new headmaster (Richard Head- I laughed my butt off when I read that) and the new football coach. The coach is not what he seems and isn't above blackmailing  Nick to get what he wants.
Nick gets divination lessons from the Grim Reaper (who is wicked funny). These lessons don't go too well and Nick tries Grim's patience like no one else has ever dared to.
During this book, Nick also finds out about his destiny (none too gently) and why it's so important that he learns to use his powers. All things considered, he takes the news that he's meant to destroy the world quite well. His crush, Kody, is revealed to be... well, we're not quite sure what Kody is. We just know that she's been sent to keep an eye on Nick and make sure he doesn't succumb to his darker side.
Finally, Nick learns the truth about the mysterious Ambrose.
I'm not going to tell you about that because you really should read these books yourself. They are tons of fun! Nick's responses to his various trial are really funny. That boy is sharp!
I honestly love Sherrilyn Kenyon's stuff. She has become one of my favourite authors, after J.R Ward. You really should give this series a try. It's lots of fun and you're guaranteed a few laughs.

Tick...Tock...Tick...Tock: an update

Sweet success. That's right, I will be attending Linkin Park's concert in November! I am so flippin' excited that I barely know what to do with myself!
I have to admit, I'm beginning to think that maybe the Mayans are right. Maybe the world is going to end this year. Lady Gaga and Linkin Park coming to SA all in the same month? Maybe the end is near.

I'm going to Linkin Park baby!

Tick... Tock... Tick... Tock...

Looks like I'm playing the waiting game... again. You may have heard that Linkin Park is going to grace South African shores in November. I don't think I need to tell anyone how really super exciting that is. But what isn't exciting is the wait for 9 o'clock. It's agonising. Plus I need to be on campus in time for my 10:30 class. So, I need those tickets before I leave for campus.
This is hugely stressful for yours truly, who isn't even properly awake yet. But I also think it's going to be hugely worth it. After all, Linkin Park has been on my "bucket list" for many years. I owe it to the angsty 13 year old me to see these guys live.
All I need now is for Incubus to come to sunny South Africa and my life will be complete.
I'll keep you posted about whether or not I get my grubby paws on the tickets.

Back To School, Back To Reality

Varsity is starting again today. I have to admit, I wasn't exactly... enthusiastic about the thought last night. In fact, I was pretty damn sad about it. Gone are my days of lazing around the house watching TV and listening to music. I now have to bully my brain into thinking.
But, surprisingly, I woke up in a good mood this morning. And it's all thanks to Jacaranda FM playing this song:

Whistle by Flo Rida. I'm not normally a huge fan of his but man, this song just makes me happy. And I hope that it makes you happy too.
Have an awesome Monday everybody!

Squeals of Geeker Joy

I am so freaking excited! As you guys know, I am a teeny tiny bit of a nerd. I absolutely love Marvel and the movies that they inspire. I'm not a huge DC Comics fan but I have always enjoyed the Batman franchise. So, imagine the squeals of delight that filled my house and nearly deafened my parents when I saw the respective trailers for The Dark Knight Rises and for The Amazing Spiderman. I can't wait to see these! In case you haven't seen the trailers, here they are:

Isn't Andrew Garfield adorable?

I am really liking Anne Hathaway being all "grrr..." and stuff. Nice to move away from the sweetness she always seems to exude.

All The Places That I'll Go...

It is effing cold again today in the normally warm, sunny Pretoria. I have to tell you that I cannot wait until summer. This cold is not working for me at all.
So I'm going to Thailand today. I don't know much about Thailand. I've seen some absolutely beautiful pictures and one little clip at Flight Centre that really confused me. Someone playing golf. Why fly all the way to Thailand to play golf?
Anyway, here are some of the amazing places you can visit if you chose to visit this beautiful place:

The Emerald Buddha Temple
Wow. No words could possibly do this place justice.
Also found in the Emerald Buddha Temple.

Doi Suthep Chiang Mai

Doi Suthep Chiang Mai.
Is this not absolutely beautiful?

The Ancient City, which can be found just outside Bangkok

Looking at some of these pictures has brought me to a decision. As soon as I have money, I'm going to haul ass to Thailand. This place is just calling my name.

I'm Just A Girl

I came to an absolutely horrifying realisation this weekend. About half my bookshelf is made up of complete and utter crap. This made me want to cry since I normally think I have pretty good taste in books. I'm not talking about my Meg Cabot books which are, essentially, books for teenage girls. I still laugh my butt off at some of her stuff. I don't think it's a matter of "growing out" of my books but realising that a lot of it is drivel. Some of my stuff is so unbelievably sexist, I can't believe I hadn't noticed it before.
I was raised on a steady diet of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy was the type of heroine that could take care of herself, thank you kindly. She could even swoop in to save her boyfriend if push came to shove.
Now, I know we can't all be Buffys. But for the love of all things holy, they can at least give us leading ladies whose brains do not seize in the presence of testosterone.
The biggest culprits are Stephenie Meyer (I'm ashamed to admit that I'm a former Twihard) and Christine Feehan. I won't knock Meyer since that's been done to death. I don't think she's intentionally sexist, I think she's just dumb. But Feehan's more recent stuff has had me sitting there staring at my book, wishing I could get in there and slap the lead characters.
I've been reading her stuff since high school. I've read enough of her books to pick up on a couple of... flaws, which can be pretty flipping annoying. She's repetitive. Seriously, she will describe how beautiful/nice/hot/macho/dangerous her characters are ad-nauseum. She has copy-paste story lines. Her male characters are all beef cakes and her female characters are all unearthly beauties who border on being nominated for sainthood. These woman are so damn sweet that they give you bloody toothache. I can normally overlook these little issues and just enjoy the story.
The last two books of Feehan's that I read were Dark Predator and Spirit Bound. These drove me to the brink of losing my ever-loving mind.
Let me start with Dark Predator. This is the 22nd book in the Carpathian series (it took me 22 bloody books to reach the end of my tether). Carpathians are these vampire-like creatures. They're immortal and the guys are really Really REALLY aggressive. They lose their emotions after a couple of hundred years and run the risk of turning into vampires who are evil and kill humans. The guys all look for their lifemate, the woman who "completes" them. Generally, the woman have little (read "no") say in the matter. They recite their little bonding ritual and that's it. The unfortunate woman is married to a horny, chauvinistic douche bag.
Dark Predator tells us about Zacarias, the oldest de la Cruz brother (yes, there are more of him). Man. I hated this guy. What a pushy, obnoxious asshole! Not that the female lead, Magaurita, is all that great herself. I wish Feehan had mentioned that this woman's middle name is "Doormat". Old Zacarias decides that he's had enough of his colourless, emotionless life and tries to kill himself. Magaurita sees him lying there trying to catch a tan and and knows that Zacarias will burn to a crisp if he doesn't get his dumb butt out of the sun. She freaks out. He tells her to buzz off and let him die but she ignores him. She saves him by dragging him into the safety of the house.
Big. Mistake.
As the book went on I found myself wishing that she had just left the bastard in the sun to fry. He nearly strangles her for disobeying him and then he bites her. He nearly kills her. He carries on with this abusive behaviour throughout the book. He is so effing controlling that he even picks out her clothes for her! Because obviously her tiny female brain can't handle anything so complicated. He then turns her into a Carpathian (a hugely painful process) without her permission. Magaurita, being the weak-kneed ninny that she is, just forgives him. She doesn't crap him out for taking that choice away from her. She just accepts that this is "the nature of the Carpathian male".
The worst part about all this? Women older than myself are gushing about how romantic this jackass is. When it's pointed out that his behaviour is overbearing and controlling to say the least, they respond by saying that "you are thinking in human terms". I kid you not.
I can't go into detail with Spirit Bound because I gave up halfway through the book. I was that pissed off with this book. Stefan, another macho man with zero consideration, cheerfully bulldozes his way into the feeble female Blythe's life. He is pushy and aggressive and condescending and I wanted to slap him. This overbearing SOB drugs his beloved to "keep her out of harm's way". At this point I just put the book down. After I had picked my jaw up off the floor, that is.
What I don't understand is how a female author can do this to her female characters? I was pretty young when I started this series so it stands to reason that other young girls are reading this stuff too. Is this really something you would want a young impressionable woman to be reading? The whole idea that a woman should just passively let her partner do whatever the hell he wants just freaks me out.
Whew...
Thank you for your patience everybody. I just needed to vent.
Have a good Monday!

Living Things

I have been a fan of Linkin Park's since I was in primary school. I first heard "In the End" during my "rebellious" phase. Even though I grew out of doing everything I could to aggravate my parents, my love for Linkin Park remained. They were my first real band, in my tweeny world of Britney Spears (cringe) and the Backstreet Boys (gag).
I have to tell you, their latest album, Living Things, is not the same Linkin Park that I first fell in love with. Which is not to say that this isn't an awesome album because it really is. It has Chester Bennington belting it out with Mike Shinoda rapping along. It's been a while since they did that. The last two albums have had one or the other, not both at the same time.
This album was super good, light-years better than Minutes to Midnight and A Thousand Suns. But I still kinda miss their more "grrrr...." sound from Hybrid Theory and Meteora.

Lego Animals

I was watching Euro News the day before yesterday and there was an article on a zoo in New York which had sprinkled a couple of Lego animals in among its real-life residents. I shudder to think how much effort this must have taken, although the results definitely seem to be worth it.
This is a drive by the Bronx Zoo to educate its young visitors about the threat to wild animals caused by pollution and habitat destruction. I think this is a super cool idea because, seriously, what kid doesn't love Lego?
Here are some pictures of the exhibits:

Building stuff with Lego for educational purposes? Some people have the best jobs ever.

Anywhere But Here

It is pretty freaking cold in Pretoria today which has led me to play another game of "anywhere but here". Today I'm going to Turkey. The cool thing about Turkey is that it has some incredibly beautiful beaches and has a whole bunch of historical landmarks that would make this history buff squeal with delight.
Here are some pictures of the places you cam visit while in Turkey. I think I'd sell an organ to be able to see some of these sights. They are that beautiful.

The Blue Mosque in Istanbul

An interior view of the Blue Mosque
Kleopatra Beach in Alanya
Bodrum Castle in Bodrum
Breathtaking stuff, right?

Oddly Sexy

Charlie Sheen is on the cover of the South African Rolling Stone this month. I've always been kinda indifferent to him, only really paying enough attention to shake my head after hearing about some of his more... outrageous antics.
But this cover picture has forced me to reevaluate my opinion of him. I still think he's a moron. But he's, dare I say it, kinda sexy.

Maleficent

I was watching E! News the other day and I saw that Disney was in line to make a movie about Maleficent, the villain in Sleeping Beauty. How freaking cool is that?!
Even cooler is the fact that Angelina Jolie is going to play the title character. I'm not normally a big fan of hers (I was on team Jennifer) but she really fits this character.
In this movie, we're going to see what it was that turned Maleficent into the crazy bi...witch that we saw in Disney's Sleeping Beauty. It will show the events that occurred before she cursed baby Aurora, which will give viewers some insight into what she was like before she was this badass that we all know today.
Also starring in this movie are Elle Fanning as Sleeping Beauty, Sam Riley (no clue who he is) and Sharlto Copley (a local yokel).

Cartoon Maleficent
Angelina Jolie as Maleficent.
Isn't she scary?
Sadly for us though, Maleficent is only coming out in March 2014. It's a super long wait but hopefully it'll be worth it.

Born of Silence

Born of Silence is the fifth book in The League series. It's set waaaay in the future where people ride around in spaceships and don't live in different countries but on different planets. Not normally my thing but I really enjoy Sherrilyn Kenyon's stuff.
This book is about poor Darling Cruel (who is a guy) and his spectacularly awful life. Darling is the prince of the Caronese empire, who is forced to live with his abusive uncle until he comes of age (30). Darling does what he can to protect his widowed mother and younger siblings from his uncle's wrath, even going so far as to pretend he's gay to cover up for his mother's illicit affairs.
Darling pretends to be this passive, effeminate guy when he is anything but. What people don't know about Darling is that he's a member of the Sentella, an organisation that opposes the League and it's brutal domination over the United Systems. Darling falls in love with Zarya, who is the leader of the Resistance. This situation is less than ideal because the Resistance is working to overthrow the Cruel family. So, like Shakespeare said, the course of true love never did run smooth.
This book was really funny in some parts. Maris, Darling's best friend, is side sidesplittingly funny. He was without a doubt my favourite character in this book. Plus we see some old favourites like Nykyrian, Hauk and his brother Fain, and Syn. But there were also some heart wrenching bits, like Darling's torture and his treatment at the hands of the aristocracy.
The League in reading order:
1. Born of Night
2. Born of Fire
3. Born of Ice
4. Born of Shadows
5. Born of Silence

Happy reading everybody!

The Chronicles of Nick: Infinity

Aaaaaannnd I'm back! Sorry that I've been so scarce everybody but I'd kinda blown through my internet usage last month. The 'rents threatened my life and limbs if I made them pay any more money to Vodacom than they already are.
Since I haven't been on the internet for what feels like forever, I caught up on my reading. I've read two books so far, both by Sherrilyn Kenyon.
Infinity is the first book in the Chronicles of Nick series. I really like this series. It isn't out of this world brilliant but it is extremely entertaining. Infinity starts us off by introducing us to Nick Gautier (pronounced Go-shay). Those of you who have read the Dark Hunter series (another one of my favourite series) will recognise Nick and several other characters. The story is set in New Orleans, where Nick lives with his sweetheart of a mother. Nick is what some people would consider "trailer trash" and because of this, people aren't very nice to Nick or his mom.
Turns out Nick is a pretty big deal in the supernatural world. He has the potential to be a true hero or he could be the guy who ends the world. It all depends on the choices he makes. The Chronicles of Nick will be taking us through Nick's journey. Since the series is an offshoot of the Dark Hunter series, it would be fun if you read that too but you don't have to. It just fills in some of the gaps.
I found myself laughing quite a bit in this book and cringing at other times. Seriously, I hope Kenyon is just using her imagination (which is pretty twisted) when it comes to the mean, petty things the "villains" in her books get up to. I don't like to think that she's had personal experiences like that or has ever dealt with people that... bleugh.
As an aside, I'm really glad I went to high school here and not in the States. Not to cause any offense or anything but American high schools sound awful
